Good Intentions Don't Save Lives, Skills Do!

Humanitarian Information Management & GIS July 8-10, 2025 in Alanya, Turkiye

About the course

This course introduces three core practical skills of Humanitarian Information Management (HIM). It covers key data tools and techniques used to ensure the most reliable data and produce the necessary information products vital for evidence-based decision making and successful humanitarian response and planning.

  1. Data Processing and Analysis with MS Excel: Excel’s Power Query, PowerPivot, Data Modeling and Data Analysis Expressions (DAX), provide a robust end-to-end data analysis workflow, from raw data to analysis results. Students will learn these tools in addition to advanced Pivot Tables techniques and will apply that knowledge by cleaning, transforming, modelling and analyzing humanitarian data sets. They will also learn how to automate the data pipeline and all repetitive tasks.
  2. Data visualization with Power BI: Power BI has become the most popular Business Intelligence tool for organizations that produce or consume data. It provides powerful visualizations to effectively communicate data-driven insights. Trainees will learn how to develop informative dashboards using data visualization’s best practices, in addition to other powerful data management and modeling tools.
  3. GIS mapping using ArcGIS: GIS analytics have huge potential, and ArcGIS is by far the best GIS platform. Trainees will first learn the basics of GIS and the different types of spatial data. They will then learn how to create different types of maps, progressing from simple maps to using multiple layers of data to visualize how the different elements of a crisis interact. Such maps provide a contextualized and wholistic view of a crisis that enables decision makers to plan and implement the most efficient interventions.

This is a practical course; the subjects are taught, and the ideas and techniques are applied using software. The training focuses on hands-on practical application of concepts and techniques with many examples using actual humanitarian data. After the training, trainees will be able to apply the newly acquired knowledge and skills in their day-to-day work.

Taught by an expert with over 20 years of field and training experience.
